The subject of this image is the Cockcroft-Walton Accelerator preserved in the NTU Heritage Hall of Physics. This was not, however, the University's first accelerator, but one that was hand-built by the students and teachers of Taiwan and Japan in 1948 after the original was shipped back to Japan in 1936. Built to usher in a new world of the future, the machinery later became the basis of Asia's first atomic collision laboratory. This machine was crafted from yesterday's dreams for tomorrow, and six decades later its image still seems to capture the futuristic spirit of past aspirations.
