In Greek mythology, the God of the Sun, Apollo, is always depicted wearing a laurel wreath on his head. In Roman culture, the laurel wreath was the representation of a crown. In contemporary times, the laurel wreath has been presented to recipients of the Nobel Prize and medalists in the Olympic Games. Known for its association with victory, the laurel wreath has long represented the honor and glory of winners and champions. The “Crown of Victory” is placed adjacent to Shi-Hsin Building, which has been named to commemorate the victory of alumnus Ms. Chen Shih-Hsin when she represented Taiwan in the 2004 Olympic Games and became Taiwan’s first athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Having been bestowed a laurel wreath, Ms. Chen is the perfect interpretation of the art work. The work is also a tribute to all the brave athletes who have toiled and fought for honor, and hopefully serves as a reminder for spectators to see beyond the scores and results, and offer their earnest applause for professional athletes who have dedicated their energy and youth for the chance to shine in the field of sports. These athletes have inspired us to live with an active attitude to life, and filled our lives with hope, and such contribution is non-reciprocal. And thus, with the utmost respect and reverence, the “Crown of Victory” is dedicated to them. Do not attempt to climb.
