The Original, inspired by the image of a flower as the symbol of unrestrained, resplendent young life, gathers together mixed-media works made by children while the artist was in residence at the school, foregrounding the children’s joy in creativity, transforming and blending their images into the dancing butterfly sculpture. Their creations and memories are frozen in the overlapping layers of visual images and time, as a metaphor for plurality. The Original expresses the uniqueness and value of every life, and the special characteristics of the school. With a lighthearted and contemporary approach, it blends local pupils’ creations into the work, to highlight the interaction between students and public art.
