These three curved, standing red and white hollow pillars represent a synthesis of the qian and kun trigrams, yin and yang, firmness and pliancy, emptiness and solidity, humaneness and righteousness. They symbolize the beginnings of the movement of the heavenly Way and the primal principles structuring the growth and completion of all living things, which are all undergoing change in a natural, perpetually renewing process of "evolution." The gentleman thus never ceases to strengthen himself, obey heaven, and respond sympathetically to others; he creates a harmonious, progressive, and prosperous society.
