Ray King is renowned for producing works that combine dichroic coated glass and stainless steel cable structures with buildings and environmental space. He often infuses his pieces with a sense of time, speed and technology, the measurement of time being an important issue for people seeking to communicate. This work takes as one of its core elements a hourglass – an ancient tool for keeping time. The thousands of glass fragments represent the sands of time, just as the changes in light at different times, as seen through the refractions of the each piece of dichroic glass, create different colored light images all around the work. This artist uses hourglass illusions to imbue the space with indeterminate and infinite possibilities, completely transforming the original atmosphere of the building, almost as if we have entered a different faintly dreamlike dimension.
