The early-period Taiwanese artist Yen Shui-Long (1903-1997), a native of Xiaying Township in Tainan County, devoted his entire life to art and beautifying rural Taiwan. He diligently developed and promoted the handicraft industry, advocating the daily-life aesthetic that “utility is beautiful.” He stands as a pioneer of Taiwanese crafts and industrial design. To this day, the murals he created surpass any other artist in Taiwan, both in quality and quantity. A restoration project was carried out on this artwork, a relief mural by the master Yen Shui-Long, which was originally installed on the wall of the old Dongmen Swimming Pool. When the pool facilities were slated for demolition, numerous agencies called for its preservation, and the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs ordered that the entire wall be preserved in its original state. Therefore, as part of the construction of the new Zhongzheng Sports Center, a plan was first confirmed by a committee of scholars and experts, then on October 4, 2004, the artwork was moved to an appropriate location by San Chou Hsing Construction Company. Gantry frames and monitoring equipment were also installed to ensure the safety and stability of the work during the temporary storage period. As construction of the new sports center reached completion, the relief was relocated to the exterior wall of the new structure on January 25, 2006, successfully integrating the old artwork in a new building. In this way, the relief has continued as an object of artistic heritage, and the original cultural features of the old swimming pool have been preserved. It also serves to reawaken the childhood memories of an older generation.
