Many historical sites stand in the West District of Taipei City. Their former glory has faded from people's awareness with the passage of time. Thus, memories of the past have stayed in the past. Inspired by the history of the area incorporated in the Taipei West Gateway project, cutting-edge display technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) guide visitors on a nostalgic tour of Taipei back in the Japanese colonial period. In the virtual exhibit, three historic landmarks, the North Gate, the old Railway Division Building, and the Mitsui Company Warehouse are incorporated in the story-telling guided tour. Users can see a 360 view all around them and appreciate the beauty of the scenes and buildings. Manipulating the handle will activate a train and building menu to navigate to the next scene. An augmented reality exhibit is also available on site, displaying a map of the area as it was in the Japanese colonial period. Visitors can scan the map with their smart phones and look around in a 3D presentation of the building. Together with a 3D text description, it can provide visitors with a more profound exhibition experience. Hopefully, we can all better appreciate the history of Taiwan through these works.
