Originally, the work was a complete image, with two figures, one above and one below, connected by a flight of stairs. One day in 1997, participants in an art action removed the whole picture between the two figures and broke it into pieces. The participants took the pieces home with a promise to return them a month later. Awaiting the promised return of the pieces, all that was left of the artwork were vertical wooden bars in the ground, representing a prison. When the participants returned the pieces and put them back in place, they completed this work of "proof art." But some pieces were missing, and their absence represented broken promises. The work will always be imprisoned by its defects. This reminds us all to honor our commitments. "I'm willing to be shattered for you. Are you willing to return for me?"
